“Words make you think a thought. Music makes you feel a feeling. A song makes you feel a thought.” E.Y Harburg
So are you? Feeling good that is?
I have talked about anchoring before, so in this blog I am going to share with you my top ten song choices. Why? Well, because music feeds the soul, it can alleviate stress as well as the sunshine (in case it's missing for you wherever you are!), and is therefore an amazing anchor.
When I came back to live in the UK in 2011, Adele's album was number one, and ALL of my girlfriends were listening to it. I have to say, I almost got sucked in too - she has a beautiful tone and the words touch us all as she sings about losing a love, but I quickly realised that I was being pulled into the comfort-zone of feeling bad, and when I heard she wrote it not long after a break up, I deleted it off my i-pod for good!
Harsh? Maybe. The reality is, this music can help you to stay in a negative state and keep you connected with sad feelings. My friend told me it was on constant replay in her car and she almost had a car accident because she couldn't see through the streaming tears! True story.
I absolutely think we need to grieve, and if we need to feel sad or angry sometimes, then that's OK too - it all helps balance life out for us, but listen to one song, or even one album - once, use one box of tissues, and then do that one thing that you KNOW will pull you out of it!
Negative emotions impact us in so many ways; if you drive to work listening to a depressing tune, your work will be affected. It is an anchor that will put you in a state, and negative states are usually not productive states.
