At Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid

Sir Bob Geldof; what a legend and an amazing, inspirational example of someone who knows how to  set a goal, stay focused on it, take positive action, and go get it with confidence.

I just purchased my copy of Band Aid 30; on the thirty year anniversary of 'Band Aid' Sir Geldof has done it again. Within two days he and his team had recorded the song, the video and had it on sale with 100% of the profits going to charity. A phone call to Simon Cowell and he's interrupting the X-factor on a Saturday night to market it to the right audience. He pulled together a host of current and continuing stars and adapted the tune we all know and love with East Africa and Ebola in mind.

I'm not usually one to dwell on current affairs, I keep a casual eye on news events, but am acutely aware that watching too much news/TV is bad for your health. What I mean by bad for your health is that the news stories are predominantly bad news and tap into people's fears and insecurities creating stress and actions that could in fact help create a bigger problem. The recession, terrorisim...fear is always heightened when they get a mention, and in the UK that is a lot! When I lived in NZ people were, well generally happier, they embraced the outdoors over TV (and no the weather was not always better), and the news was generally good, with politics being more about the latest person the prime minister was sharing a smile with.

But when Sir  Bob speaks you sit up and listen... and with a song that starts with the line 'It's Christmas-time, there's no need to be afraid' I'm in.

So let's let in light and banish hate, we do live in a world of plenty and certainly we can spread our smile of joy. If you are reading this you are one of the richest people in the world, look at all you have, and if you need support, go get it...there is never a need to live in fear, life is for living at Christmas time or any time.

You can get your copy on itunes.

How to be Smart Lazy and Still Earn Your Worth

11/13/2014

I used to beat myself up for being lazy, sitting at home watching a movie as opposed to doing something, anything more proactive, like exercising or working REALLY hard on my business until midnight like really successful people do.

In exercise I like the idea of Pilates – the problem is, it felt too easy and if I am not sweating buckets I think I’m cheating (maybe I am, how can anyone know I am doing a pelvic floor right?). I used to feel the same about work too. If I didn’t literally bleed over it I’d feel like I hadn’t earned it, like somewhere there was a candid camera catching me out; this feeling is a more commonly known symptom of ‘imposter syndrome’. Phew - a diagnosis!

The beliefs we are given from a young age contribute massively to this; our school, the media, the news, the generations before us…but life has changed. We have the World Wide Web for a start, making it far easier to work smarter.

Now I choose acceptance and I admit, I like short cuts aka working smart. I like earning money for doing things I enjoy that feels easy to me. I like going to bed at a normal time and waking up fresh and full of ideas…then working from my bed until midday if I so desire.

It is all about changing our beliefs and perceptions around what lazy and hard working really mean. Can you relate to any of these beliefs?

Belief                                                                                                    Replace With

You have to work hard to get wealthy                                         I provide real value for others and ask for a                                                                                                                             good price

I am too lazy to earn a lot                                                                 I am relaxed about being ambitious, I can work                                                                                                                      smart

It’s selfish to want a lot of money                                                 The money I earn shows the value I create for                                                                                                                         others

Money is the root of all evil                                                            Money is neutral source to do good with my life

You can’t get paid to do what you love                                     I love and value what I do and charge the right                                                                                                                       price

As humans we look for our purpose and meaning in life, often wrapping that up into the career that means we are working our way to financial freedom. This job is traditionally better known as the career that is high profile, stressful, and at the end of the day we KNOW we have earned that salary but we are too knackered to enjoy it, so we adopt the ‘work hard/play hard’ mentality and live for long and luxurious holidays and retirement. But what if we organise our laziness, accept it as the part of us that just wants to chill out and be laid back. What if we outsource, or create products that don’t need us there all of the time; could you let go a little and embrace your lazy?

A friend of mine has been working in music for years, she does it because she loves it, and she is very very good at it. Some time ago she slipped into a little rut (you know the ones that feel more like a massive gaping chasm with no way out, and more and more things seem to keep happening to make it worse), and then a fan offered a financial ‘air lift’ out. The universe was really looking out for her, and why wouldn’t it? She is an amazingly talented and giving person…yet she promised this fan all sorts of products and gifts in return, she wanted to work really hard to pay him back and came up with all sorts of creative and time consuming ways to do it. What she missed was that her music had already pulled him out of many many ruts in the past and this was his way of saying thank you, this was her true value returned. But that was too easy.

I have worked with many clients who have had similar stories; take the time that money was offered by the boss to pay for the personal development programme a client had already paid for. She thought about investing in coaching for weeks, worrying about where the money would come from, and in the end took a leap of faith and delved into her holiday money. In that moment, through that one action, she said to the universe, this is important and I am going to do what it takes. Two weeks later she was offered the money from her boss on the grounds it was professional development... and she turned it down. Why? It felt too easy.

If you are doing the right thing and you believe in it, then life should be easy. We only have the one, so why believe it’s going to be hard. I say, be smart lazy. It works.
